YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Paste any YouTube URL — we extract the video ID and show all 5 thumbnail sizes from YouTube's public CDN. No upload, no API key.

Every YouTube video is served with up to five thumbnail images at predictable URLs — from a 4K "maxresdefault" version (1280×720) down to a tiny default 120×90 preview. The ToolEdge YouTube Thumbnail Downloader takes any YouTube URL, extracts the 11-character video ID, and shows you all five thumbnails as one-click downloads. It runs entirely in your browser; we just hit YouTube's public thumbnail CDN at `i.ytimg.com` (no API key, no auth, no proxy).

The tool handles every YouTube URL format that exists in the wild: `youtube.com/watch?v=ID`, `youtu.be/ID`, `youtube.com/shorts/ID`, `youtube.com/embed/ID`, even raw video IDs pasted directly. Maxres (1280×720) is the standard upload size for modern videos; older videos may not have a maxres version and we'll fall back to the highest available. Use these for thumbnails of your own videos, building thumbnail compilations or grids for blog posts, or grabbing reference imagery for design work.

Common use cases

  • Retrieving thumbnails of your own past YouTube uploads when you've lost the original source files.
  • Building a thumbnail grid for a blog post or roundup article that links to multiple videos.
  • Generating thumbnail collages or A/B test variants for analyzing what makes thumbnails click-worthy.
  • Downloading a thumbnail to use as a social-media preview image when sharing a video link manually.
  • Saving the maxres thumbnail of competitor videos for design inspiration and analysis.

Frequently asked questions

Yes — any public YouTube video, YouTube Short, or unlisted video (as long as you have its URL) has thumbnails at the same predictable URLs. Private videos don't have public thumbnails. Some very old videos (pre-2015) may not have a maxresdefault version; the tool falls back to the highest available size automatically.
